Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, well known for her novel Anne of Green Gables (1908), wrote The Blue Castle in 1926. The novel takes place in the early 1900s in the fictitious village of Deerwood, which is based in Ontario's Muskoka region. Deerwood is modelled after Bala, Ontario, which Montgomery visited in 1922.
